The Court Company Specifications for Racquetball Courts

PART 1 - GENERAL
1.01 SCOPE:
Provide prefabricated court systems complete, including but not limited to the following:
 
A. Wood wall and ceiling panels
B. Steel or wood support framing
C. Wood floor
D. Glass walls and windows
E. Light fixtures
F. Accessories
G. Shop drawings and samples
   
1.02 RELATED WORK SPECIFIED ELSEWHERE - WORK NOT INCLUDED
 
A. HVAC components
B. Leveling of slab
C. Electrical wiring and hook-up to light fixtures
D. Drywall or other interior court finishes
   
1.03 QUALITY ASSURANCE:
A. For purposes of establishing quality requirements, these specifications are based upon The Court Company panel system as supplied by The Court Company, 3059 Forest Hill-Irene Road, Suite 100, Germantown, TN  38138, (901) 682-2600.
B. All work in conjunction with the courts as indicated on the drawings and specifications herein shall be installed by specialty subcontractor.
   
1.04 SUBMITTALS:
 
A. Shop drawings: Submit required number of sets for review.
B. Samples:  Submit sample of wall panel and floor.
   
1.05 PRODUCT DELIVERY STORAGE AND HANDLING:
 
A. Cover and protect material in transit and at site. Material not properly protected and stored and which is damaged or defaced during construction shall be rejected.
B. The permanent HVAC system must be operational and maintaining court area to 65° to 78° and 40% to 60% humidity during storage and installation.
C. Materials and components shall be stored in spaces where courts are to be constructed.  Store materials and components neatly and properly stacked.
   
1.06 COORDINATION:
  Manufacturer shall provide shell dimensions for court system to General Contractor.  Installers shall not be responsible for incorrect details and job dimensions beyond their control.  Coordinate with responsible trades to establish, verify, and maintain field dimensions and job conditions.
   
1.07 WARRANTY:
The manufacturer shall warrant the panels against defects for ten (10) years from the date of installation.  Should defects occur, the subcontractor shall proceed with corrective action to remedy the defect.  Installation and/or workmanship shall be warranted for one (1) year after job completion.  This warranty applies only if The Court Company’s specifications for panel installation and procedures are met and courts are used under normal playing conditions. Courts must be maintained between 65° to 78° and 40% to 60% humidity for the warranty to apply.

PART 2 - PRODUCTS
2.01 PANELS: Tongue and groove panels system.
 
A. Thickness:  Front wall panels to be 1-1/8” thick; side/sear wall panels to be 7/8” thick; ceiling panels to be 5/8” thick. Panels milled to an accurate 90° angle and pre-grooved at the factory.
B. Dimensions:  Panel sheets shall be 4’0” x 8’0” and 4’0’ x 4’0” and installed in a staggered configuration.
C. Surface:  High pressure laminate shall be .050” thick on both sides of the panel.
D. Core: Industrial grade high density particle board with an overall composite density of 55#/cf.
E. Attach panels to steel stud system with screws and heavy bodied structural adhesive.
   
2.02 STEEL FRAMING:
 
A. Walls: 4” or 6” x 18 ga. steel studs for all walls; 6” x 18 ga. studs in joining wall sections of multiple courts.  Space studs in front walls at 12” o.c.; space studs at side and rear walls at 16” o.c.  Supporting steel structure shall be free standing type.  All walls shall be plumb and vertical, maintaining the exact dimensions as shown on the drawings and required for regulation size racquetball and squash courts.
B. Ceilings: 6” x 16 ga. steel joists spanning across court and attaching into channel track fastened to side wall studs.  Space joists at 16” o.c.  The panels shall be pre-cut to receive the light fixtures and shall be attached to the ceiling joists with screws through tongue and groove and glued with industrial adhesive.
C. Batt insulation:  Preformed glass fiber batt, friction fit type with paper facing covering one side, flame spread 25 or less, thickness to match steel stud depth.  Install where specified on plans.

2.03 FLOORS:
 
A. Concrete sub-floor shall be furnished to the court subcontractor broom-clean and finished smooth, straight and level to where minimum tolerance is ± 1/8" in a ten (10) foot radius. All leveling to be done by General Contractor.
B. Wood floors shall be installed according to the manufacturer’s recommended procedures. Floors are to be solid throughout to provide a uniform bounce of the ball and to have color variations in the wood.
C. Flooring materials
1. Flat grain 25/32" by 2 ¼” second grade or better northern hard rock maple, tongue and grooved.
2. 2 x 3 sleepers with 3/8” rubber pads attached or 2 layers of ½” CDX plywood with 3/8” rubber pads.
3. ½” gap left between side walls and floors.
D. Seal and finish coats applied per manufacturer’s requirements.
E. Game lines painted of required color and widths.
   
2.04 GLASS:
  Specialty glass manufacturer specified by The Court Company.
   
2.05 LIGHTS:
2x4 fluorescent lights manufactured by HE Williams or equal.
   
2.06 ACCESSORY OPTIONS:
 
A. Valuables storage compartments (Goody Boxes).
B. Wood doors to be full height and pre-hung using a piano-type hinge.  Soss hinges are not acceptable.  Glass doors available upon request.
C. Wallyball kits include fasteners, net and ball.
D. Fixed wall-mounted basketball structures.
E. Auto Hoop® disappearing basketball assembly.

PART 3 - EXECUTION
3.01 PREPARATORY WORK:
 
A. Installation of courts shall not be made when the building is especially cold and damp or hot and dry.  Temperature and humidity shall be maintained during storage, installation and thereafter as follows:  Temperature range is 65° to 78° and humidity to be controlled between 40% and 60% at all times.
B. Cover and protect all materials from damage by the weather or other trades.  Take proper precautions to protect all finished surfaces over which or against which courts must be installed.
   
3.02 INSTALLATION:
Install courts complete in locations shown on the drawings. Courts shall be installed by qualified and authorized personnel of the manufacturer making certain courts are plumb, level and square.
   
3.03 CLEAN-UP:
Clean up all debris caused by the work of this section, keeping the premises clean and neat at all times.
